Coming thru the ranks I hated being told to “step back and simplify.” If I knew how to do it, I would have.
Talked to 5 EVP of hotel management companies this week. Asked each how they got that concept across to managers and upcoming leaders.
Their approach is based on how far along an employee is. 4 of 5 said it was one the most enjoyable parts of leadership. Great to see recognition when employees realized they could do it.
6 Step Process to Teach Employees how to Simplify
Each stressed importance of being very calm.
Encouraging employees to reflect before acting. Then giving simple directions.
Teach Importance of asking thought provoking questions, versus giving answers.
Model actions they want employees to emulate. Showing importance of desired behavior.
Demonstrating how to break projects into steps.
Giving employees opportunities to break projects into steps. to lead. Practice t he process so they can pass it down.
All indicated importance of building trust and teaching them to stay calm. To think about what they are doing. All agreed immediate guidance is best, but…lots of things that determine “best” time.
All 5 leaders follow these steps. (And have been successfully developing leaders for 10-20 years.) They each will change the sequence depending on the individual and what they need now.
CTA: Take a minute to reflect on what works for you. Take another minute to share your successes.
