We all want both. But which is most important?

Most of us have spent decades striving for success and the recognition it brings. Ever noticed, other executives don’t seem to strive for anything? It just comes naturally and effortlessly? Their careers are always on the rise. Opportunities seek them out.

What the heck are they doing differently?

Justin Wright had interesting article this week that put above into perspective.

He clearly believes being valuable is most important. If you are valuable, success will seek you out.

Striving for success is about us. Value is helping others. When we are chasing success people quickly see the difference. They also see the difference when we are helping others. In small and/or big ways.

Justin points out, people who are providing value seem to do it naturally. That’s because it is natural. They don’t keep score. Or think “what’s in it for me.”  They just do it!

Fortunately, we can all learn the skills.

5 Ideas to Build Your Value…to Bring You More Success

  • Value is helping others. It can be personally or professionally. Reach out.

  • Find a problem at work and solve it. Don’t wait for someone to bring it to you. Take the initiative. Doesn’t have to be big problem. Nuisance ones are often better.

  • Share your knowledge on daily basis. Quicker everyone can do your job sooner you can advance.

  • Make others look good…daily if you can. Give credit where due. But it needs to be honest credit. People instantly see through fluff recognition.

  • Become indispensable…by helping others.

Success is evaluated by how many lives you have made better. Not just today, but throughout your career.

The exciting part? You can start building your value anytime.

As you do you will experience the success it brings. Soon you will see it daily. People will be seeking you out. Asking to be involved in your projects. Anxious to tie their success to your tail.

Mike Leber has quote I refer to often.

"A healthy culture isn’t built in off-sites or slogans. It’s built in the small, daily moments that tell people: “You matter here.”
