Experienced Leaders, have all made at least one bad decision. Up-and-coming leaders. Learn from rest of us. Go make your own mistakes. Don’t copy ours!
So what happens?
Highly qualified people make decisions in areas where they lack expertise. Usually when under tight deadline. Pressure that prevents leader getting all information they need.. When decisions blow up, this is usually the cause.
So how do you protect yourself?
By understanding when you are setting yourself up for this.
Easy to make bad or marginal decisions. Especially when selecting new employees or consultants. Or relying heavily on recommendations of perceived experts.Avoid decisions that need to be made immediately.
That does not mean to stop. But consider postponing decision for one day. Gives chance to see other options. Right answer is long term answer, not quickest.Look for objective decisions.
Easy to rely on “reliable” vendors Or long-term suppliers. Is solutions long-term?
Short-term answers are often less reliable.
What do experienced leaders do?
They search for answers that “feel right.” Fit logic, facts, and stand up to scrutiny.
They slow their minds down.
Carefully evaluate criteria. Using diagnostics.Experienced leaders judge quality first.
Speed and convenience are distant criteria. They stick with their core expertise.
Situation outside core expertise? They immediately seek help.Never make emotional decisions.
Even when decision is what they proposed.Brand/Vendor/Consultant familiarity and “reviews” carry very little weight.
Why do other leaders make mistaken judgements?
On the surface, bad decisions can look exactly like good decisions.
Ever heard “buyer beware?” If it appears quick and easy, it’s probably “buyer beware.” Listen to your gut voice.
How do best leaders proceed?
They immediately call in other people. Experienced with similar decision. Or others who have experienced need for tough immediate decisions. These leaders want to make best quality decision they can. That means seeking out advice.
How soon do they call in these people? Same day, ideally meeting with them within 1-2 hours of the “crisis”.
What do experienced leaders do when there is no time?
Make a temporary decision.
For 3-4 days. Minimal time it will take to make quality decision. They don’t make long term irrevocable decisions under stress.
Anyone who has made bad decision willing to share:
