Kurt Alexander, President of Omni Hotels was recently interviewed in Fortune.

Guaranteeing your job security is easy in world of AI. Cultivate natural skills you have, that AI doesn’t.

AI is great at eliminating jobs that are highly repetitive. That does not fit most hospitality jobs. Not even Housekeeping. As a job, housekeeping is repetitive. Going through motions may characterize most of housekeeping. There is surprising amount of thinking that goes on. Thinking that AI is not good at. And may never be good at.

Alexander pointed out, to succeed in hospitality people need attitude rarely found in AI. An attitude to serve is a requirement. Hospitality takes strong work ethic coupled with resilience. Ever see a good hospitality employee who didn’t care about people

5 Traits Hospitality has that AI Doesn’t

  • The ability to calm frustrated, upset people.

  • Employees who can switch gears quickly. Are good thinking on their feet.

  • Create personal; experiences guest crave. Yes, your employees crave them too. How is your hotel/employer addressing that?

  • Experiences that make guests want to come back.

  • The ability to read people quickly. The best housekeeping employees notice guests with question. They assist.  Robots are still far from interpreting eye movements.

In addition to above, hospitality employees use technology. But Kurt also stressed importance of intuition to know how to refine…technology or situations above.

3 Simple Daily Steps to Enhance Your Caree

  • Every job has routine, mundane duties. Do them exceptionally well…every time. More important, think. Who can do this better? AI perhaps? Without this task, how could you better serve the hotel? Your career?

  • Start of day. In 30 seconds review 5 steps Kurt Alexander outlines above.

  • End of day go back to 5 steps. Write down how you made hotel and people better.

CTA: End of week, write short memo to your boss on your accomplishments above. Demonstrate your value. Show your leadership. Willingness to serve. Save these weekly notes for your next performance review. Excellent ammunition to demonstrate your worth.
